Deaf Interpreter Academy's Current Initiatives:

Gear Up

Gear Up is offered to the Deaf Interpreter who has little experience working in the interpreting field. This program offers, but is not limited to, mentoring, seminars, and hands-on interpreting practice. This program is for Deaf Interpreters who desire to get in-depth focus training and needs a boost to their skills and broaden their professional opportunities.  ​

Next Step

Next Step offers webinars and case studies focusing on the work of a Deaf Interpreter. Webinar offerings include a variety of topics including team interpreting, self care, and current issues relating to the field of interpreting. At the end of the program we offer an opportunity to put your learning to work in a mock interpreting situation where you will work with a hearing team and receive feedback from Deaf and Hearing mentors. Our goal in Next Step is to provide opportunities for Deaf Interpreters who desiring to deepen training and boost their skills, and broaden professional opportunities.  ​

Do you work as a Deaf Interpreter and desire to learn more about interpreter teaming?

Do you want to develop your interpreting skills and build knowledge about processing models, demands and control schema, and working with hearing interpreters?

Do you posses an innate understanding of the role of the Deaf Interpreter and in working in Deaf and hearing community?

Do you desire to learn and practice interpreting and working with a hearing interpreter?

You have completed your 40 hours training in Deaf interpreting, and desire to continue your practice and training?

If so, we have developed a program to support your goal of working as a professional ASL/Translator interpreter. Our programs have been developed by hearing and Deaf interpreters to share their experience and knowledge. We have included several options for online training, education, mentoring, and mock interpreting. This training is offered at no cost and is available in many areas in North America.


DIA Program Tracks

The Deaf Interpreter Academy program contains several programs that are designed to support your journey to becoming a professional interpreter or provide additional training to those already working as a Deaf Interpreter. Our programs focus on:
  1. Interpreting skills
  2. Introduction to the field of interpreting
  3. Group mentoring and one-on-one mentoring
  4. Support in transitioning from training to the profession of interpreting
  5. Deaf Interpreter and Hearing Interpreter teaming
  6. Linguistic and cultural foundations
  7. Self care

Deaf Interpreter experience

A common part of the Deaf experience is being a sign language user, which is a term that refers to an individual who was raised in a Deaf school, or Deaf family where a language other than English was used, in this case, American Sign Language.*
