In this activity driven webinar interpreters will practice using visualization as a way to connect to and remember the source message.  They will also be asked to assess how their schema and ability to visualize the content of the message, contributes to the linguistic and cultural effectiveness of their interpreting work.

Prerequisties

This self-paced lesson lays a solid foundation for understanding the cognitive process we must attend to when interpreting. Learners will become familiar with the interpreting process and recognize the impact on predicting, listening, remembering, and visualizing in the effectiveness of an interpreted message. Earn .05 CEUs by completing this training.

The Presidential campaign is upon us, and it brings with it democracy and democrats, the election and the electoral college, constituents, primaries, the commander-in-chief, and of course, gerrymandering. In short, the election presents unique interpreting challenges from the language of politics. This workshop is for interpreters who believe that if there are people willing to talk or teach about American politics, we should do a super-heroic job interpreting for them. This is a brief, but deep dive into elections, government, the constitution, ideology and parties, and presidential power. The goal of this workshop is to prepare interpreters for the challenging language that appears during the electoral process.  But language doesn't exist in a vacuum, and in order to truly interpret for meaning, one requires a deep understand of the material. Strategic stopping points are planned throughout the session to support the development of interpreting strategies for difficult concepts.

All of us experience times where we are off-balance, overstressed, or overwhelmed while interpreting and in our personal lives. If we are not careful, we may go days, weeks, or longer without realizing we are out of balance. Plus in the midst of a stressful period in our lives, we may not have the capacity to think about ways we can exercise self-care, be gentle with ourselves, or what it will take to get back into balance again.  Having an individualized plan in place will help us notice the telltale signs of being overly stressed, or out of balance and identifies ways to make it through difficult times and get back to feeling like our "old self" again.

First video, you will view about managing your level of alertness after you have complete first video then you will be ask to view video about the basics of stress. "Stranger in a Strange Land: Interpreting for Non-Native Deaf and HoH Consumers" by Johanna Katz-Searls

The United States is a leading country for accessibility and education for Deaf and Hard of Hearing people, with the passage of the ADA (American with Disabilities Act) and established collegiate programs for Deaf and HoH such as Gallaudet University. This is one of many reasons why Deaf and HoH individuals immigrate to the US. However, many of these individuals may arrive in the United States with very little personal experience with interpretation services.  This workshop will aim to provide participants with a better understanding of the cultural and linguistic differences that immigrants have upon arriving to the U.S. Participants will have an opportunity to ask questions and learn about common life experiences of immigrant and refugee Deaf and hard of hearing consumer, as well as how to interpret effectively for these individuals both culturally and linguistically.

"Peeling the Onion: Engaging Diversity, Equity & Inclusion" by Dr. Jenny Gough and Max Williamson

In this workshop we will explore implicit bias and promoting equity.  Biases, attitudes, and stereotypes all can affect our understanding, actions, and decisions without us being consciously aware, and go on to influence and create inequalities in our systems.  Through discussion and activities, participants will learn to become more culturally responsive and promote equity in a society that is becoming more racially and ethnically diverse.  Participants will examine challenges and work on unlearning implicit bias, enabling them to adopt an equity-centered approach for serving individuals and communities from various racially, ethnically, and socioeconomically diverse backgrounds.

Bio: Dr. Jenny Gough is an Interpreter Education Specialist under the Sorenson Interpreter Education Professional Development department. She also is an American Sign Language department chair and faculty at Berkeley City College. She teaches interpreting class under Interpretation Preparation Program at colleges and universities. She is teaching an ASL, Linguistics, Deaf Culture, Deaf History, Deaf Education classes in various settings since 2006. She involves training with an emphasis on diversity, equity and inclusion, leadership, and team development since 2015.
