Case Study
You have been assigned to interpret for an appointment with the Department of Family Services. The father is hearing and has the 3 children ( 12, 10, and 8) Monday-Friday. The middle daughter is Deaf. The mother is Deaf and has the children on weekends. She also seems to have a different ethnic and cultural background. She now has a live in hearing girlfriend. During a weekend visit with mom, the kids snuck out in the early morning. They walked to a busy intersection and were caught throwing rocks at passing cars. The police took them to the family crisis center who called DFS and set up a meeting with the parents. The purpose of the meeting is to decide what is in the best interest of the children, limited time with the mother or full custody with the father. The mother seems to take the whole situation lightly, saying, “That’s life.” When DFS asked the mother to attend parenting classes, the mother went into a rage. The mother looks at you and says, "this counselor doesn't like me because I'm Deaf and have a girlfriend." You know the Deaf child and father from the school you used to work at, however you don’t know the mother. You have never worked with your HI, but they know that you know the father and Deaf child.
