Importance of ASL Foundation Skills Know your ASL Features
Let's look at several important ASL linguistic components including sign parameters, use of space, and depiction. While you are watching the videos presented here, consider how these features vary by consumer.
 As you watch the video on phonology, consider your background in ASL linguistics. Have you studied linguistics previously? Discuss your past experiences studying ASL linguistics in your group discussions this week.  How does this knowledge help you in assessing your consumers' language abilities?

Depiction is such an integral part of ASL usage! However, it is often one of the last skills that ASL learners acquire with any fluency. As a Deaf Interpreter you will need to be able to use a lot of depiction to make your points visually clear.
