Personal vs. Professional
Answer the question below and discuss with your peer. If more discussion would be helpful, discuss also with your mentors or even Bonnie.
Applying Personal vs Professional:
Applying Personal vs Professional:
- What are some of your personal views/beliefs?
- How could some of those views/beliefs affect your professional work?
- What does it mean to behave professionally even when teaming with someone who you don't get along with or wouldn't chose to work with? What will would that look like? (Sometimes it's helpful to think what it does NOT look like).
- How could pre-conferencing before the appointment help? What would you discuss?
- Can you think of a time (interpreting or other) when your core beliefs were counter to what was happening? How did you handle that? If you were interpreting could you remain neutral?
- Is there anything or anyone who you might want to talk with your agency about, like a HI or DI who you need to not be scheduled to work with?
A few scenarios to consider:
I've had infertility for years and I'm struggling to deal with possibility that I may never have children. The medical appointment I am interpreting turns from an annual checkup to a more detailed discussion about the patient's fertility.
My team got sick and the replacement is someone I would NEVER choose to team with. I don't know this until we show up for the appointment.
The IEP meeting you are interpreting is being led by an extremely audist teacher and the child's hearing parents are being led toward choices that you feel strongly are not right for the deaf child.
Make up a scenario of your own-
