Importance of ASL Foundation Skills - Know your ASL Features

During these first few weeks, we will be focusing on building a linguistic and cultural foundation. This foundation is important as we build your interpreting skills; it provides us with a common understanding of the role we each play as interpreters. Let's look at several important ASL linguistic components including sign parameters, use of space, and depiction. While you are watching the videos presented here, consider how these features vary by consumer.

Watch this video and consider how you set up space in ASL. Have you seen new signers misuse space in ASL? How does this affect the meaning? As an interpreter, what miscues might you see, and how would you repair them in your interpretation? 
As you watch the video on phonology, consider your background in ASL linguistics. Have you studied linguistics previously? Discuss your past experiences studying ASL linguistics during your mentoring discussions this week.  How does this knowledge help you in assessing your consumers' language abilities?
Depiction is such an integral part of ASL usage! However, it is often one of the last skills that ASL learners acquire with any fluency. As a Deaf Interpreter you will need to be able to use a lot of depiction to make your points visually clear. 
Activity Ideas:
Describe each person’s possible language background & identify possible challenge areas for interpreting/communication– while discussing each individual, change your signing style to ‘match’ each signer.  View the videos together, discussing each individual.  What you don't finish, the participant should continue to analyze via video in GoReact, then review their own work and comment.

This is a Ted Talk with two speakers. Use your hearing interpreter mentor & closed captions as guides for this more advanced platform interpreting piece.

Sight Translation Practice
Activity Ideas:
After watching Eileen Forestal 'Shaping the Future' video, discuss what roles we all play in the DI/HI team.
Practice Sight Translation of the Medical History & DMV forms. How do you change your style based on various consumers?  Along with using the provided link for the practice DMV test, you can google DMV practice tests for YOUR OWN STATE as well and practice interpreting that test.  Look for practice tests that look the most like your state's test.

Activity Ideas:
Interpret the HIPAA Compliance video with your team mentor.
Interpret Setting A Vocational Goal with your team mentor.
Review your SMART goals with your team. How are you progressing? What support do you need to be successful?
Chat with your cohort about the difference between Deaf interpreters and advocates.
Week of October 20th
Consecutive Interpreting for Various Consumers
Activity Ideas:
Interpret the "Check Into a Doctor's Appointment" video. The video is in audio format with captions.
Practice your sight translation with the HIPAA form.
Practice taking feeds from a hearing consumer in the Vocational Evaluation video.
