Communication styles, personality types, respect for consumer/colleagues, plus attitudes toward the work are factors that contribute to successful teaming. In this webinar, we will explore “Leading with the heart,” a philosophy of caring for your interpreting work, desiring to bring out the best in your teaming, and focusing your energy on enabling people to connect. Weaving tools and strategies to build teamwork and trust, Deaf interpreters can extend their scopes of influence which will lead to greater success in interpreting.

"Unpacking Sexuality: Bringing Unconscious Bias to the Forefront" by Bethany Gehman
Monday, June 28th, 4:00pm-7:00pm MST (3:00pm PDT, 4:00pm MST, 5:00pm CDT, 6:00pm EDT)
This workshop is intended to provide interpreters and interpreting students with opportunities to examine and analyze sexuality issues, explore values/attitudes/beliefs about sexuality, identify situations where skills with sexuality interpreting would be useful, and apply what was learned to interpreting practice. Participants will also learn appropriate and efficient tools aimed at making them more comfortable with interpreting sexuality content. Consent is not applicable only in sexual relationships—it is also applicable in professional relationships between an interpreter and client. (This workshop also includes some LGBTQIA+ awareness training.)

Bethany Gehman, M.Ed., an AASECT certified sexuality educator, with a decade of experience in child development and education fields. Bethany is a skilled, compassionate educator, coach, and consultant who has supported individuals across the United States and Canada. Bethany, a certified sexuality educator, has more than ten years of experience in child development, K-12 education and sexuality education. As a Certified AASECT (American Association of Sexuality Educator, Counselor, and Therapist) Sexuality Educator, Bethany utilizes experiential activities to guide individuals through their ongoing process of being in relationship with themselves and/or their loved ones. With a background in family and child studies and psychology and a master’s degree in human sexuality education, Bethany’s approach with people integrates empathy, accountability, and creativity. Bethany has worked with thousands of individuals, educating and supporting personal and professional journeys.

How do you want me to feed you the message?" is a key question each Deaf-hearing interpreting team member must address before going into an assignment. Deaf and hearing interpreters combine their abilities, knowledge, and skills to co-construct the interpreted message through shared message processing. The building of “Swift Trust” is required for teamwork to happen. This workshop focuses on steps to understanding and meeting the needs of each team member to ensure that the shared processing of the message conveys accurate interpretations. Through guided practice, participants will work through key strategies involved in working in tandem. Interpreters will then be involved in a mock interpreting scenario where they will apply the principles learned.

Swanhilda Lily, MA, DI, Legal Qualified
Interpreting experience: Swanhilda has been interpreting since 2008, with court interpreting experience since 2015. Bio: Swanhilda received her BA in ASL and Masters in Sign Language Education. While getting the education, this has lead to various jobs in the areas of research, interpreting, developing, teaching, and presenting.
